Reclaiming My Voice – a lived experience of strangulation

Reclaiming My Voice – a lived experience of strangulation

March 2025

“Reclaiming my voice” is a physical and metaphorical description of recovery following strangulation.

This short video is a collaboration between survivors and IFAS with the hopes of showing other victim/survivors of strangulation that you can reclaim your voice, that your experiences are valid and that your voice is important.

This video is a homage to all victim/survivors of strangulation and the journey many may be on.

This project explored feelings of shame and isolation, and how sharing lived experiences of strangulation to make change, has helped survivors in the process of reclaiming their voice.

“I want to thank you for listening. Undoubtedly my experience was one of utter fear, I cannot compare it to anything and there is so much you have to do to recover and heal. I’m still healing after all these years but everyday my experience remains.

Knowing others have suffered too but have the support and research you’ve all invested is so important and helps to validate as the video expresses. I am privileged to be a part of it and thank you for giving me the opportunity to contribute to something that is so important.”

Information leaflet for victims

Some people who have been strangled feel embarrassed or feel that they are to blame. This is never the case.

You are not to blame.

If you, a family member or friend has been affected by strangulation our information leaflet (available in 8 different languages) provides details on what you need to know.

Lived experience of strangulation

At IFAS we rely on hearing from victims, survivors and family members about the impact of strangulation in all contexts. This helps inform our work on addressing strangulation in the UK.
