Today, the Institute for Addressing Strangulation (IFAS) is proud to publish its first national Impact Report, Recognising the Risk: Transforming the UK’s Understanding and Response to Strangulation.

Since our establishment in October 2022, IFAS has worked alongside survivors, healthcare professionals, researchers, policing, criminal justice agencies, government and specialist organisations to strengthen understanding of non-fatal strangulation and improve responses across the UK.

The report highlights four years of progress in research, professional education, clinical leadership, policy development and survivor-informed practice, while recognising that there is still much more to do.

Key highlights

  • Over 22,000 frontline professionals trained
  • Approximately 20 research publications
  • National clinical guidance developed
  • Research helping inform policy and practice
  • Survivor voice embedded throughout IFAS’s work
  • Collaboration across healthcare, policing, criminal justice and government

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has contributed to this work, particularly the victims and survivors whose experiences continue to shape our research, resources and training.

Together, we can continue strengthening the UK’s response to non-fatal strangulation through evidence, collaboration and survivor-informed practice.
