{"id":2696,"date":"2025-03-26T12:02:22","date_gmt":"2025-03-26T12:02:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifas.org.uk\/?page_id=2696"},"modified":"2025-03-26T12:17:20","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T12:17:20","slug":"ifas-responds-to-the-domestic-homicides-and-suspected-victim-suicides-report","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ifas.org.uk\/ifas-responds-to-the-domestic-homicides-and-suspected-victim-suicides-report\/","title":{"rendered":"IFAS responds to the VKPP Domestic Homicides and Suspected Victim Suicides report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1733 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ifas.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IFAS-SafeLives-QR-code-2-e1714060538813-300x223.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ifas.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IFAS-SafeLives-QR-code-2-e1714060538813-300x223.png 300w, https:\/\/ifas.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IFAS-SafeLives-QR-code-2-e1714060538813-1024x762.png 1024w, https:\/\/ifas.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IFAS-SafeLives-QR-code-2-e1714060538813-768x571.png 768w, https:\/\/ifas.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IFAS-SafeLives-QR-code-2-e1714060538813-1536x1142.png 1536w, https:\/\/ifas.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IFAS-SafeLives-QR-code-2-e1714060538813-2048x1523.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Institute for Addressing Strangulation (IFAS) welcomes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vkpp.org.uk\/vkpp-work\/domestic-homicide-project\/\">report<\/a> published by the National Police Chiefs\u2019 Council, the Vulnerability Knowledge and Practice Programme (VKPP) and the College of Policing.<\/p>\n<p>This report builds on our <a href=\"https:\/\/ifas.org.uk\/dhr-reports-2024\/\">existing research<\/a> that highlights non-fatal strangulation (NFS) as a risk factor in domestic homicide and suspected victim suicides following domestic abuse.<\/p>\n<p>In this report, across domestic homicides and suspected victim suicides previous non-fatal strangulation was present in:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1586 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ifas.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/BP-for-web.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"29\" height=\"33\" \/><strong>23% (n=25\/108) of victims that died by poisoning or drugs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1586 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ifas.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/BP-for-web.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"29\" height=\"33\" \/><strong>21% (n=47\/222) of cases of death by hanging<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1586 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ifas.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/BP-for-web.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"29\" height=\"33\" \/><strong>14% (n=9\/64) of deaths by strangulation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1586 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ifas.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/BP-for-web.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"29\" height=\"33\" \/><strong>8% (n=2\/25) of deaths by suffocation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Further to this, their analysis into suspected suicides following domestic abuse found that:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1586 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ifas.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/BP-for-web.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"29\" height=\"33\" \/><strong>58%\u00a0(206\/354)\u00a0of the cases of SVSDA over the four-year dataset had an identified history of coercive and controlling behaviour (CCB).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1586 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ifas.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/BP-for-web.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"29\" height=\"33\" \/><strong>In 27%\u00a0(56\/206)\u00a0of these cases non-fatal strangulation was a coexisting behaviour<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We cannot ignore the risks (as identified in the VKPP report) to the current and future safety, health and well-being of victim\/survivors and the risks to other potential victims. That lives continue to be lost due to the actions of someone else is everybody&#8217;s business. We support the call for all agencies to consider these findings, raise awareness of the risks associated with non-fatal strangulation including the relationship to domestic homicide and its prevalence within cases of suspected victim suicide following domestic abuse.<\/p>\n<p>IFAS, funded by the Home Office, works to address strangulation in the UK and continues to conduct research, develop resources and, with our partners\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/safelives.org.uk\/training-courses\/non-fatal-strangulation-training\/\">SafeLives<\/a>, develop training to support frontline professionals across all agencies and services to improve the response to victim\/survivors, including managing the risks associated with non-fatal strangulation.<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, our work is informed by survivors of strangulation who share their experiences of reporting\/disclosing strangulation across many services and agencies.
